Leaders in Tipton County say they’ve slowed down the process of building a new jail as they look at additional sites for the new facility.
Leaders agree that a new jail is needed in Tipton County to replace the one that was built in 1894 and has been remodeled several times. The last addition to the jail was built in the early 1980s.
Officials thought they had a seven-acre site on West Jefferson Street that would fill the bill and they began awarding bids on the new jail. But after reviewing plans further they have all but given up on that site and are looking at other sites and may re-do the bidding process. They hope that will bring down the cost on the project.
