The Place Planners Suffer Setback In Plans

An Upland couple’s plans to open a center for artists and educators to gather in downtown Marion have hit a snag, but they say it isn’t stopping them from moving forward.

Catherine Johnson and her husband wanted to use a building on South Adams Street to be called simply, “The Place.”  It would be a meeting spot for artists, performers and educators to perform and share.  The Johnsons were given a building by former State Representative P. Eric Turner for that plan.

But the building had too many problems and would cost too much to fully repair.  So the Johnsons plan to have the building demolished and search elsewhere.

Catherine Johnson told members of the Marion Board of Works that they’ll have the building torn down in the coming months.  But she says they’re not giving up their dream.

The Johnsons were not able to raise enough money to properly repair the building on South Adams Street, but she says city officials are now helping them to find another site.
