CAFO Clarification

To clarify a story which ran yesterday on this radio station, a proposed confined animal feeding operation in northern Grant County received approval WITH CONDITIONS Monday night from the Grant County Area Plan Commission.

Nolan Holloway is proposing to build a 9-thousand hog contained animal feeding operation just off State Road 15 north of Marion. The plans have received approval from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

According to county code, 25 minutes was allotted to each side to present their cases. An attorney hired by the neighbors opposed to the CAFO brought in professional witnesses, which used most of the allotted time for the opposition point of view, leaving only a few minutes for members of the public to voice their opposition views.

Holloway must now adjust his original plan by the November 5th Area Plan Commission Meeting, to meet the additional conditions specified by the Plan Commission, including moving the structures to comply with setback requirements.

Opponents say the facility would affect water tables and property values, and they worry about the smell that could be caused by such a facility.

The Area Plan Commission will vote on the final plan for the CAFO on November 5th at 7pm.
