Former Deputy Charged For Stealing Evidence Drugs

A former Grant County Sheriff’s Deputy has been charged with three criminal counts in connection with the theft of drugs that had been kept as evidence from other cases.

Following an investigation by Indiana State Police, 42-year old former Sheriff’s Lieutenant Shelby Taylor has been charged with Theft, Official Misconduct and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

The investigation revealed that Taylor was one of only three Sheriff’s employees who had access to the secured property room. Between March of 2015 and April of this year, Taylor allegedly used that access to remove prescription medication that had been submitted into evidence from various criminal cases.  Taylor purportedly removed the medication and filled out forms indicating the evidence had either been destroyed or submitted to a lab for testing. But there was no evidence that either had occurred.

Taylor resigned from the Sheriff’s Department after the investigation began.  He’d been with the department for 22-years.

Taylor is now free on his own recognizance.  He’s scheduled to appear in court next week.
