Legislation designed to protect high school athletes passed in the General Assembly Thursday, and is now in the governor’s hands.
If the governor approves it, the new law would protect student athletes by increasing mandatory safety training for football coaches, including courses on concussions, heat emergencies, and proper equipment usage. The legislation also mandates that any student who leaves play because of a concussion or head injury is not permitted to return until at least 24 hours later.
The bill additionally provides coaches with civil immunity in cases of concussion and head injury unless negligence or misconduct is involved.
