Legislation preventing employment discrimination against military veterans passed the Senate unanimously Tuesday.
The bill would make it illegal for an employer to refuse to hire an applicant due to their status as a U.S. military veteran, National Guard member or reservist.
State Senator Jim Banks, who himself serves as a reservist for the U.S. Navy, sponsored the bill authored by State Rep Martin Carbaugh. He says Indiana’s jobless rate for post-9/11 veterans is currently 20-percent, more than twice the state unemployment rate at under 7-percent. Banks says the legislation sends a message that Indiana cares for its veterans and will continue to advocate for them.
The bill now returns to the House.
