The Drug Take-back day last weekend in Grant County was successful and although drug totals have slightly declined from the spring across the county and across the state, the year’s results prove there is a great need for the program. 11 Tons of unwanted medications were collected statewide, amounting to 22.5 tons collected this year. That’s up by nearly 8 tons from last year.
DEA Indy Office Assistant Special Agent in Charge Dennis Wichern says they believe up to 25% of those drugs collected are controlled substances. He says Indiana has a significant problem with prescription drug abuse. Wichern says prescription pain killer abuse now causes more deaths than car accidents and that’s one reason they conduct the program.
The next drug take-back day in Grant County will take place in the spring of 2014 in front of the Marion Police Department.
