Numerous department heads spoke out passionately Tuesday night against proposed cuts totaling a million dollars from the City of Marion’s 2014 budget.
In a heated exchange, Transportation Director John Lawson told Councilwoman Madonna French that her proposal to cut nearly 140-thousand dollars from his department… including some personnel…would affect him personally.
Marion Police Chief David Gilbert said French’s logic was flawed saying she never approached him to talk about how the cuts would affect public safety.
The council did not pass French’s proposed cuts, but did approve having Mayor Wayne Seybold cut 1-point-1 million dollars more from the historically low budget.
Mayor Seybold says he will not trim the budget any more than was originally proposed, and says he will veto the motion if the council passes it next Tuesday.
