Gov. Pence Pleased With 2014 Legislative Session Results

by Sammy Edmonds posted Mar 24 2014 3:33PM
Governor Mike Pence says he‘s "very pleased" with this year’s legislative session that gave him victories on nearly all of his top priorities.
By Pence‘s count, 20 out of 24 of his legislative requests are on their way to his desk, including three of the biggest items: a preschool aid program, a new round of highway funding, and a menu of local-option cuts to the business personal property tax. Pence says those tax cuts will persuade more businesses to consider locating in more Indiana communities, even though county officials insist they‘re not interested in enacting the cuts.
The governor says the whole point is to make the tools available to local leaders, and says he hopes the bill is a step toward getting rid of what he says is a burden to Indiana economic growth.
Pence played a visible role in overcoming Senate opposition to the preschool plan. The resulting 10-million dollar pilot program requires him to find savings within the Family and Social Services Administration‘s existing budget to cover the cost. Pence says he’s already found sources to fund that program.
