ISP Warn of Rental Scam via Craigslist

by Sammy Edmonds posted Mar 11 2014 3:30PM
A rental scam using Craigslist has popped up again in central Indiana.  Indiana State Police reported a Plainfield resident answered a Craigslist ad for a rental home in Noblesville in late February and got an email asking to fill out an application from an Irene Parrish, who stated she now lived in California.  Parrish said she needed $1,900 wired to her to cover the deposit and one month’s rent.  The Plainfield resident wired the money, but then received another request from Parrish for another $950.  The victim refused payment saying she did not received the keys to the house.  It was later discovered the home had been sold to a realty company a week prior to the Craigslist posting.

Prospective renters are encouraged to ask for proof the seller owns the property, then follow up by checking with the County Assessor’s Office.
