Starting in April, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital will create its own police department independent of Muncie law enforcement.
“The Star Press” reports a bill passed by the state last May made the switch possible. Any county, municipal or private hospital in Indiana may establish its own police department as long as it meets three requirements: officers must undergo a psychological evaluation, a criminal background check, and must complete the minimum training and educational requirements from the hospital board and local law enforcement.
The hospital will have a swearing-in ceremony on April 3rd for its new chief Doug Hale, their former security department manager.
