The city of Kokomo has purchased a former steel plant site that has undergone years of environmental cleanup and plans to use the land to try to reduce damage from future flooding.
The “Kokomo Tribune” reports the sale of the Continental Steel Superfund site marked the end of nearly 10 years of discussions between city officials and Howard County. The city bought the property for five-thousand dollars and purchased 54 flood-damaged properties in the area for 500-dollars apiece.
Plans for the Continental Steel land parcels include the continued development of a 60-acre soccer complex and the development of a roundabout. The city of Kokomo also is planning to develop a storm-water basin at a quarry site.
