Legislators are turning to private groups to get a preschool financial aid program off the ground. The House had voted to fund a five-county pilot program for preschool aid, but the Senate has balked at the price tag, especially if the initiative backed by Governor Pence expands statewide.
House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) says the latest proposal would call for private matching funds to cover 10 to 15 percent of the cost. He notes several private foundations have said they‘re eager to participate in a preschool program, and says the proposal would give them a chance to demonstrate it.
