Secretary of State Connie Lawson yesterday announced a 14-million dollar settlement with several Indiana school districts and the Indiana State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. That settlement will bring a million dollars to Marion schools.
The litigation accused the I-S-T-A and the N-E-A of defrauding Indiana schools out of more than 27-million dollars. The I-S-T-A and the N-E-A both sold health plans with benefits to 27 school corporations, including Marion. They then used the money from the plans for their own benefit to cover funding shortfalls.
The settlement money will go to the school corporations to compensate for their lost investments.
Marion school officials say the settlement money will be used to pay retirees money owed them.
