Madison-Grant High School’s head football coach Craig Barr wants to raise the bar among all athletes at the high school, and he says it starts with health and nutrition. Barr along with Athletic Director Ryan Plovick have started the “Champ Club”, which officially kicks off today. Barr says Indiana is the 4th most obese state in the country, and he mainly attributes that to lack of programs and standards in schools. He says the most important thing for student athletes is not how hard you work...it’s nutrition.
Barr says as part of the Champ Club, he wants to raise 50 to 60-thousand dollars for an updated weight and fitness room, provide vending machines with healthy snack choices, and possibly hire a strength coach.
Barr received full support from the Madison-Grant School Board last week, and the group is now at the fund-raising stage. They’re mainly looking at corporate support and grant opportunities for the initiative.
