One person died early Sunday morning in a house fire in Marion. Firefighters arrived at 537 East Sherman Street just after 2 a-m Sunday. Deputy Coroner Chris Butche says a woman and her 12-year-old son were spending the night with a family of three at the time of the blaze. All but the one woman were able to escape the burning home.
The victim’s name has not yet been released pending positive identification, which is set to take place today in Fort Wayne.
Three police officers who had forced their way into the home in an effort to save the woman were taken to Marion General Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
The home was completely destroyed. The fire is being investigated by the Marion Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Foul play is not suspected.
