Muncie Schools Need $2-million For Buses

by Sammy Edmonds posted Jan 22 2014 3:10PM
Muncie Schools must come up with about two-million dollars to fund its’ transportation system next school year after the State Department of Education rejected Muncie’s request for a waiver to discontinue bus service.

A referendum on funding the bus system failed in Muncie last November and school officials said bus service would end for the corporation at the end of the current school year.  But the Department of Education said last week that Muncie must keep its’ buses running next year.

School officials have a 30-day window of opportunity to file an appeal or a lawsuit through the court system to get the state to reconsider.

School officials say the only way to come up with the money to pay for bus service would require cuts in staff district wide...something they don’t want to do.
