The leader of the Indiana Senate says it‘s still possible that a pilot pre-Kindergarten program could be approved this year by the General Assembly, as Governor Pence wants.
Senate President Pro Tem David Long says the keys are how to pay for it and finding consensus. A Legislative study committee will look into the merits of a publicly funded pre-K program for all public schools.
Governor Pence asked lawmakers for a pilot program that would provide vouchers for pre-K education to a thousand students from low-income households. The Senate voted to eliminate the program, instead sending the pre-K debate to a summer study committee. But the governor is urging the Senate to re-think the plan.
