A simulated smoking trailer has been traveling around Grant County for 26 years teaching children what to do in the event of a real fire.
This week and next, the Gas City-owned “Smokehouse” is making stops at schools and other local agencies in recognition of National Fire Prevention Week.
Gas City Assistant Fire Chief Pat McClure says children are put through a simulated smoking environment with hopes they will learn what to do if the unfortunate event actually occurs.
McClure says the simulated activity is partially responsible for the drastic reduction in the number of juvenile-instigated fires in Gas City.
Children are taught that if they see a lot of smoke to not panic, just get low and use caution to find their family’s pre-designated meeting spot.
