The Indiana State Fair might sell beer this year, for the first time since 1947. A House committee has added its approval to a bill lifting the ban on alcohol at the fair. A vote in the full House could come as early as next week. A yes vote would send the bill to Governor Pence.
House co-sponsor Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield) says every other state except North Carolina sells alcohol at its state fair, and notes Indiana‘s fairgrounds serves alcohol at other events. He says the ban was instituted not because people were drinking too much, but because there were empty cups strewn everywhere that had to be cleaned up.
The bill would leave it to the State Fair Commission to decide where and how alcohol is available.
