Developer Wants To Change 5 Points Mall Into Vet School

A developer last night told the Marion City Council that he wants to buy the Five Points Mall and turn half of it into a college for veterans.

Charles Everhardt of Lockwood Development of Omaha, Nebraska wants to purchase the mall and turn the western, or rear portion of the mall into a college for veterans.  The college would have its’ own classrooms, dining facilities and even several small apartments for the veterans to use while they’re at the college.  The eastern portion, or front part of the mall would remain a retail center…but would no longer be considered a mall from that point.

According to the “Chronicle-Tribune,” Everhardt said the plan has never been tried in the United States, but is something his firm wants to try.  He said the veterans college could create up to 100 jobs.  Everhardt estimated buying the mall and instituting his plans would cost his company between 10 and 15-million dollars.

City Council members gave their initial support to the company’s idea for the Five Points Mall…which has struggled for several years.
