Smitherman Resigns As Elwood Superintendent

The Elwood School Board Friday accepted the resignation of Superintendent Casey Smitherman, after she sent a letter of resignation earlier that day.

Smitherman recently was charged with several criminal counts after she admitted using her insurance to help a sick student get treatment, but lied to do so. Court document show Smitherman was charged with Insurance Fraud, Identity Deception and Official Misconduct.  She allegedly took the student to get a medical check, then got the boy medication for Strep Throat by falsely identifying him as her son.

Attorney Bryan Williams said Smitherman will enter a diversion program, which will allow the charges against her to be dropped if there are no further arrests in the coming year.
