Frugal Marion gas station attendant gives big gift to local organizations

A Marion resident has bequeathed more than $650,000 and his home to seven local organizations as his final wish.

Dale Dietrich, a frugal gas station attendant, couldn’t stand the idea of spending money on himself, according to his estate planner Jason McVicker.

Instead, he saved every penny and gave donations to Marion Public Library, Hands of Hope, Services for the Visually and Hearing Impaired, Meals on Wheels, Grant County Senior Citizen Center, Cancer Services of Grant County and the Salvation Army.

Dietrich, who deeply wanted to lift victims out of domestic violence situations, donated nearly $250,000 to Hands of Hope.

To Cancer Services of Grant County he donated his North River Road home.

To the other organizations he donated $82,707 each.

McVicker said it was his privilege and pleasure to get to know Mr. Dietrich and that he is hopeful his legacy will be these charitable donations because he was a very special man.
