Grant County Commissioners to create plan to reconfigure D-home

During yesterday’s Grant County Commissioners meeting, Superior Court 2 Judge Dana Kenworthy spoke about the struggles local judges face to alleviate the issue of overcrowding at the Grant County Jail.

The jail’s population has consistently been over 300 inmates in recent months.

According to Kenworthy, the best available option is to convert the Juvenile Detention Center into a space for both adults and juveniles, in order to free up space in the county jail and also to keep local kids home to help rehabilitation efforts. By allowing juveniles to stay in Grant County, rather than reconfiguring the detention center into an adult-only facility, it will also save the county money as it’s an expensive process to send juveniles out-of-county to another detention center.

The commissioners announced that they’ll work with local judges and Sheriff Reggie Nevels over the next three weeks to complete a strategic plan to re-configure the detention center.
