SUMMARY:SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK ASKS EAST CENTRAL INDIANA TO TAKE ACTION TO END HUNGER
DESCRIPTION:This September the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana together with the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks\, will mobilize across all 50 states in an effort to bring an end to hunger. Hunger Action Month is designed to inspire people to take action and raise awareness of the fact that 42 million Americans\, including 13 million children\, are food insecure\, according to the USDA.\nIn East Central Indiana more than 70\,000 people struggle with hunger and may not know where they’ll find their next meal. That number includes one in five kids who may not have enough to eat.\nIn the East Central Indiana area\, Second Harvest encourages everyone to “Go Orange” on Thursday\, Sept. 14. to support Hunger Action Day®. On this day\, your group or business can enter into a drawing for orange mystery prizes and receive recognition by Second Harvest staff.\nIdeas include: wear orange clothing\, hats\, shoes\, costumes; decorate your office in orange; take a picture of your orange lunch spread; create a group photo with an orange backdrop and/or add an orange filter to your group’s Facebook profile picture.\nTo participate post photos of your orange spirit on Facebook using the hashtags: #HungerActionMonth and @curehunger.  Please use these hashtags or Second Harvest cannot count your entry!\nAlso\, the Hunger Action Month 2017 campaign includes getting supporters involved to consider how it must feel to live with an empty stomach\, which puts a healthy life and a promising future at risk. Second Harvest encourages individuals to share photos on social media on what they couldn’t do without adequate nutrition by writing on an empty plate\, “On an empty stomach I can’t ______\,” and filling in the blank with something they couldn’t achieve without the nutrition we need to thrive.\n“With the combined effort of Feeding America\, the nationwide network of food banks and hunger advocates across the country\, the goal of this campaign is to raise awareness about hunger and inspire Americans to get involved\,” Aviv said. “The Feeding America network is leading the fight to end hunger in the U.S. We all have a role to play in getting food to our neighbors in need. Advocate. Educate. Volunteer. Donate.”\nFor more information about Hunger Action Month and hunger in East Central Indiana\, visit our Facebook page and website throughout September. SUMMARY:ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S®
DESCRIPTION:The Alzheimer’s Association invites Madison and surrounding county residents to unite in a movement to lead the way to Alzheimer’s first survivor by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. The Anderson Walk to End Alzheimer’s\, presented by Statewide Premier Partner Eli Lilly & Company\, will take place Saturday\, September 23\, at Shadyside Memorial Park.\n \nWalk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for nearly 500 participants in east central Indiana who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved — from advocacy opportunities and clinical studies enrollment\, to support programs and services. In 2016\, the Anderson Walk to End Alzheimer’s raised more than $64\,000 for Alzheimer’s care\, support and research. The Alzheimer’s Association hopes to raise $74\,000 at the 2017 event.\n \n“The momentum in the fight to end Alzheimer’s continues to grow\,” said Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter Executive Natalie Sutton. “The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is an inspiring event that brings Hoosiers together in anticipation for a cure. Participants actively raise awareness and funds to advance research and provide care and support services for Indiana families facing Alzheimer’s disease.”\n \nIn addition to the one or three-mile walks\, participants will enjoy complimentary food and family-friendly activities. Participants will also honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with a poignant Promise Garden ceremony.\n \nMore than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease\, the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States and the only disease among the top 10 causes that cannot be cured\, prevented or even slowed. Additionally\, more than 15 million family and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias in the U.S. In Indiana alone\, there are 110\,000 people are living with the disease and 335\,000 caregivers.\n \nTo start or join a team today\, visit alz.org/walk. To learn more about the disease and available resources\, call the toll-free Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900.   \n \nAlzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®\nThe Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care\, support and research. In 2016\, the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter hosted 12 Walk to End Alzheimer’s events throughout the state\, raising more than $1.8 million. Since 1989\, the Alzheimer’s Association mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk®; now the Alzheimer’s Association is continuing to lead the way with Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Together\, we can end Alzheimer’s – the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death.\n \nAlzheimer’s Association®\nThe Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care\, support and research. Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Our vision is a world without Alzheimer’s. Visit alz.org/indiana or call 800-272-3900.\n###
