As millions of Americans await their tax refunds, the I-R-S is warning you to be extra careful about where that money is coming from.
The I-R-S says scammers are stealing data from tax preparers’ computers, then filing fraudulent tax returns. In some cases the thieves use the taxpayer’s real bank account to file the refund, then call the recipient while posing as a debt collector, telling them to return the money.
But the money never reaches the IRS, instead going to the scammers.
