The Pro Farmer grain marketing newsletter, sent a team of 60 field scouts across Indiana to get a late-season assessment of Indiana’s major grain crops — and it’s not good.
The team said in terms of maturity, this year’s Hoosier crops were some of the worst ever.
The latest USDA report says 32% of corn rated as good-to-excellent and 27% is poor to very poor. The remaining 41% is fair.
The immaturity of the crops is the result of late planting, due to flooding early this year.
Two-thirds of Indiana corn was planted in June when it’s usually planted by early May.
Once farmers did get their crops planted, the rain became nearly non-existent.
