Marion firefighter put on administrative leave without pay after arrest

A member of the Marion Fire Department has been placed on administrative leave without pay after being charged on four counts following an incident on Nov. 2.

Chance E. Cowgill, 33, has been charged on one count of domestic battery, one count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, one count of possession of marijuana and one count of possession of paraphernalia.

Cowgill’s attorney, David Glickfield, disputed each charge and defended his client’s innocence, at one point stating, “The concerning charge, the battery, arose from a situation in which he and his girlfriend had gotten into an argument. There was no actual physical contact in any way between the two.”

Glickfield also disputed the operating a vehicle while intoxicated charge, stating that it would be difficult for the state to prove that Cowgill was above the legal threshold at the time he was driving.

Marion’s Board of Works determined that he will not be receiving pay during his leave of absence pending the hearing.

If found not guilty, Cowgill may be allowed to receive back pay as compensation.
