Grant County Highway Dept. readies for winter conditions

An increase in salt has left the Grant County Highway Department spending $10,000 more than last winter.

This year, salt prices have spiked an extra $10 per ton, according to Highway Department Superintendent David White.

To keep the roads clear and safe to drive on, the Highway Department has ordered a thousand tons of salt to get them prepared for this winter.

White says that the department usually uses around 3,000 tons of salt a year.

However, the department has leftovers from last year, resulting in a smaller order.

The department also has around 25 trucks used for clearing roads and will be using the same plowing and de-icing strategies as in years’ past.

“It’s the same approach,” White says. “We’ll see what the weather brings.”
