Indy’s Newby Oval will be dedicated as a state historical marker

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway wasn’t actually the first famous oval in Indianapolis. About a decade before IMS opened, Newby Oval was built as a premier cycling track during the biking craze in the 1890s. Now, the track — located along the Fall Creek Parkway Trail, east of 31st Street — will be dedicated as an Indiana state historical marker. The ceremony will be Saturday, July 24.
